Sony’s games business bolstered by rising PS4 sales
It's been a good year for Sony's Game and Network Services division — which handles the company's video game operations — with sales, operating revenue, and operating income all growing year-over-year.
Sales and operating revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2016, increased by 11.8 percent, rising to 1.6 trillion yen ($13.7 billion) from 1.4 trillion yen ($12.8 billion) in 2015.
Operating income also received a welcome boost, climbing to 88.7 billion yen ($785 million) from 48.1 billion yen ($443.8 million) — an increase of 84.3 percent.

Kukouri Mobile sells off properties as it exits game development
PocketGamer reports developer Kukouri Mobile Entertainment is leaving game development.
In a statement, CEO Petri Piipari revealed the studio has gradually moved away from game development "for a few years now." It's already sold its two game IPs, Pixel Worlds and Tiny Troopers, to Social First. The studio itself still exists, but will pivot to another industry.

Spearhead Games is laying off the majority of its dev team
Canadian indie studio Spearhead Games is laying off the majority of its development team after struggling to secure funding.
The company is also "indefinitely" halting development on Unforetold: Witchstone on March 8, 2024. That means Hotfix #7 will likely be the last update for the title.

Square Enix reviewing production pipeline amid spluttering sales
Final Fantasy maker Square Enix is looking to reshape its production pipeline to revitalize its game business.
As reported by Bloomberg (via Google translate), company president and representative director Takashi Kiryu announced the pivot during a financial briefing.
Kiryu suggested that Square Enix will become less reliant on outsourcing studios and focus on producing large-scale titles internally with a focus on improving the quality of its releases and driving profit.

Stalled Ouya just landed $10 million investment, report claims
The Wall Street Journal reports that Chinese internet giant Alibaba has invested $10 million in struggling game company Ouya.
The report, based on comments from anonymous sources "familiar with the matter", claims Alibaba made the investment last month and is considering integrating the Ouya platform (and its catalog of games) into its own line of set-top boxes.
That would be a first for Alibaba, an e-commerice giant in China that operates sites that function much like eBay and PayPal do in the West. Alibaba software has powered third-party Chinese set-top toxes like the Wasu Rainbow since 2013, but it has never released its own console hardware.
