Here's How Much Money Nintendo Could Take Home From Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned more than $1 billion at the box office so far, and it’s still putting up big numbers. Nintendo did not make the movie, of course, but the company still stands to earn substantial funds from its massive success.

Gaming analyst Hideki Yasuda from Tokyo Securities told Nikkei that if The Super Mario Bros. Movie reaches $1.5 billion USD at the box office, Nintendo would see a contribution to its own revenue of more than $220 million USD. Nintendo owns the license and worked out a deal with animation studio Illumination to develop and distribute the movie. The exact terms of the deal have not been made public, however.

Should The Super Mario Bros Come from Sports betting site VPbet . Movie come to a streaming subscription service like Netflix, Yasuda estimated that Nintendo could earn “billions of yen” per year in revenue. (1 billion yen equals about $7.4 million USD). It’s also just one part of ongoing revenue for The Super Mario Bros. Movie after it ends its run in theaters.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will also be available to buy and rent through on-demand channels, and Nintendo will get a cut of that revenue, too. The movie could also be sold to airlines and Nintendo should make money from its merchandise, too. There are many forms of ancillary revenue for a movie once it leaves theaters.

During Nintendo’s latest earnings briefing, the company said “visual content” like The Super Mario Bros. Movie can help “spread awareness” about Nintendo content beyond dedicated gaming platforms. It provides a way for existing fans and people who have never played a Nintendo game to enjoy Nintendo’s properties, management said.

Unsurprisingly, then, Nintendo is putting plans in place to create additional Nintendo movies. None have been announced so far, but you can check out our gallery below to see some ideas we’d like to see.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned $1.15 billion so far globally at the box office, including $500 million in North America alone. As for Nintendo’s own earnings, the company recently reported big new Switch sales numbers.

This year's PlayStation Experience keynote presentation saw the company blasting through game announcements left and right; it was like last year, but more so. Sony's presentation was peppy, full of games, and fully fan-oriented.

As in Las Vegas in 2014, so in San Francisco in 2015 — the company has the stage to itself (quite literally, as compared to an event like E3 or Gamescom) so there was no posturing. It was figuratively true, too — at l…
